DIY Ceramic Tile & Grout Cleaning Videos
Recently I received a short You Tube video from a Facebook friend demonstrating how she recently cleaned her entry that was approximately 16 square feet and made out of ceramic tile and sanded grout. The grout lines were almost black and definitely needed cleaning. This woman was using Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner to clean the grout lines. In this short You Tube video she squeezed the blue liquid out of the bottle directly on to the sanded grout and waited about (1) minute then wiped away the dirt & grime. Like magic the grout line looked incredible. Is this something you should be using?
Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner is a blue liquid that has as one of its ingredients - Hydrochloric Acid. The pH of this cleaner is somewhere in the neighborhood of (1) which makes it very caustic. Yes it is an acid. The acid content in the Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner DID NOT clean the grout line like the demonstrator thinks, but it ate a layer of grout. The acid literally ate a thin layer of the grout and because the dirt and grime was imbedded into that layer it came out when the grout came out. If she continues to clean with this product she will eat away the grout until it no longer exists.
Two things she fails to mention in this video is that you need to wear latex gloves to keep the acid from burning your skin and IF she had attempted this same demonstration on limestone, travertine, or marble it would have severly etched the natural stone. I can only imagine the damage this could have done. Finally it is important to note that she did NOT neutralize the acid in the grout line leaving it in an acidic state. This would have continued the erosion of the grout lines and could have burned any pets, small children, etc. who may have walked on this surface in their bare feet.
When reviewing these type of videos it is important to do your own due diligence. This Facebook friend I am sure means well, but her solution could be the cause of new problems in the future. If you have questions or concerns please give me a call at (916) 525-2456.
