Using Carpet Shampoo To Clean My Tile:

Occasionally I receive a telephone call from a DIY, which stands for Do It Yourself. These individuals have come to the conclusion that they will tackle their tile and grout cleaning issues on their own but still want some free advice so that they do not screw up their tile and grout floors. Recently I had such a person call me and ask this question, "Can I clean my tile and grout with carpet shampoo"?

Carpet Shampoo, typically found in Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Target etc. are all basically the same stuff. If you buy a gallon of carpet shampoo 80%, often times it is more, of that gallon will be water, 10% will be surfactant (stuff that eases surface tension of the soap), 5% will be some type of alkaline cleaner with a pH level of 8.0, with the remainder 5% being some type of good smelly perfume.

Wether you have porcelain tile, ceramic tile, or some type of natural stone, such as travertine, carpet shampoo will not harm the tile nor the grout. Man made tile such as porcelain and ceramic are both water proof and will not be harmed by the carpet shampoo. Natural stone should not be harmed either, but you could leave a soapy residue that will cause the floor to dirty faster the next time. It could also cause the floor to be slippery. Most grout is made from the same ingredients as concrete and has a pH of 11.5, since carpet shampoo is on the alkaline side of the pH scale it will not harm the grout either. However, you should not expect great results. After grout has become impacted with grease, grime, oils, etc. it is very difficult to remove with cleaners bought from the local hardware store or the local tile floor store. It often requires very hot water to melt the grime and loosen it up from the grout pores. You also must be able to extract the yuck from the floor once you have loosened it from the pores. Even with a Wet-Vac vacuum this can be a difficult task.

If your DIY didn't put the 'WOW' back into your once beautiful tile and grout floors then it is probably time to give a professional a call. Liberty Floor Solutions is the only factory trained - factory certified tile and grout cleaner in the Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin County areas. Why not give us a call right now while it is still fresh on your mind. Call (916) 525-2456.

Until Next Time,
